I think that's a good resolve for people who are indeed smokers. Luckily, I've never had that vice (I'm too busy having worse ones). I know people who have smoked throughout pregnancy and in none of the cases I know personally did it do the child any good. Some were actually seriously damaged by it.
As for the lady on the tram, I can't tell you if you smoked throughout pregnancy or not. All I know is she was the mother and she carried a whole, brand-new pack (she had to take the clear plastic wrapper off it) of fags in her pocket, one of which she took out and stuck behind her ear for when she exited the tram. That makes me think she isn't someone who occasionally sneaks a fag from a mate, but that it's a habit she's got. And yes, again, I agree: how could anyone do that to their child?

When I used to smoke I always swore that if I was still smoking by the time I wanted kids, I'd give up when I was pregnant (if not trying to become pregnant) at the latest - and then having made it through pregnancy, why on earth would I take it back up again? That's what I don't get - or did she smoke throughout pregnancy? And how on earth *could* you do that to your child, born or unborn? xxx

You go ahead and do that! I was never one to find Indian accents swoon-worthy (though I did think they were charmingly funny) until I met the Indian. I like it because he's so likeable.

Italians don't make me swoon anymore. Got my heart broken by one in highschool and been off that drug ever since. :D

Glad you popped by and took the time to comment, Terroni.

Hi Terroni :) Yes, I am a Maria reader. In fact, I wound up in your neck of the cyberwoods through her blog. Now I'm addicted to both of you incredible ladies.

I hope she gets around to reading this and maybe leaving me a wise comment. You are so right when you say she might know what to say.

The Indian is indeed the first man in a looooong time I've become stupid around. Here's hoping for a reunion of sorts so I can do that some more. :D

Are you a Maria reader? (She's in my blogroll.) I ask because as I read this, I thought, Maria would know what to say here.

Me? Not so much.

Getting man advice from me is like going to a mechanic whose own car doesn't run.

As you know, though, I can certainly sympathize with that 'stupid around him' feeling. Been there. Done that.

I'm imagining it in an Italian accent instead. Because that's what makes me swoon. ;)

If you get that feeling about someone it's usually true - that there was more there to discover. Here's hoping you do get that chance - after all, never say never! And if he feels it too what's to say he won't end up finding work back in your neck of the woods?

Hi Maria :) Interrrresting. I'm glad you decided to take charge of the situation. He might just have been gay and wanting to get a close look at your gorgeous high heels, but that's a risk I'd also be unwilling to take. Luckily my height and... girth don't seem to invite people to seek a possible physical altercation with me, even when they have vicious intentions. But for a little itty-bitty power woman like you, safe is still better than sorry, right? And for me too, I guess.
I actually did look creepy thin man right in the eye, but that was even creepier. He truly had inscrutable, cold eyes. He obviously felt strongly about me for the few seconds we shared in that tram, but it was really impossible to tell whether for good or bad. Thanks for the encouragement M, lord knows I need it right now. :)

I was at the library yesterday and met one of those "types". When I got my books, I headed out to the parking lot. You have to walk down this long sort of tunnel like hall to get to it. He followed about two feet behind me. I decided that I was going to take control of the situation, so I whirled around and told him to please stop following me so closely, it was making me uncomfortable. I made eye contact and held it. He backed off. I hurried out to my car. It was dusk and there were no other people about, when I was nearly to my car, I heard him call, "I like your high heels."

I got into the car and had to drive past him to get out of the lot. He raised his hand to wave, a lit cigarette in his hand. I ignored him. Sometimes, it feels sort of good when you take charge.

Maybe he was staring at you because you were pretty or he liked your coat or your shoes or maybe he was just a freak. It helps to stare back, makes you feel more in control. Just my opinion.

I hope things get better for you, A. You are a person of great value.
